Reviving Relics and Crafting Smart Keys: Another Day in the Life of a Buffalo Locksmith

As a locksmith, no two days are ever the same. Each job comes with its unique set of challenges and stories. Recently, I had the opportunity to work on three interesting projects that highlight the range of services I offer—from crafting keys for classic vehicles and vintage campers to programming smart keys for modern cars. These jobs were all referrals from other locksmiths in Buffalo who trust me to handle these unique and challenging tasks.

Making Keys for a 1992 Audi Quattro

One of the more intriguing projects involved creating a new key for a classic 1992 Audi Quattro. This vehicle is a rare find and a favorite among car enthusiasts. However, the job wasn’t straightforward because the ignition had been replaced. Normally, the easiest way to make a key for this model would be from the door lock. But with a replaced ignition, that wasn’t possible, so I had to create the key directly from the ignition—a more precise and challenging process.

The customer was thrilled to get a working key for their vintage Audi, and I was happy to help bring a piece of automotive history back on the road.

Bringing Back Memories with a 1976 Trillium Camper Trailer

Another memorable job was creating a key for a 1976 Trillium camper trailer. This camper held sentimental value for the customer, who fondly recalled camping in it as a child. Over the years, the camper was put into storage, and the key was lost. Now, she’s reviving it for new family adventures, and part of that revival involved getting a new door key made.

Creating a key for an older camper like this requires care and precision, especially given the wear that locks can experience over decades. But once again, I was able to deliver, and the customer was overjoyed to have a working key for her cherished camper.

Programming a Smart Key for a 2017 VW Jetta

Not all jobs involve older relics; sometimes, it’s about modern convenience. Recently, I also had the task of programming a smart key for a 2017 VW Jetta with a push-to-start system. Unlike traditional car keys, smart keys require precise programming to ensure they work seamlessly with the vehicle’s electronic system.

These types of jobs require specialized equipment and expertise, but they’re becoming increasingly common as more vehicles move to keyless entry and push-to-start systems. After carefully programming the smart key, the customer was happy to be back on the road with a fully functional push-to-start system.

Why Expertise Matters in Both Classic and Modern Locksmithing

These jobs highlight the breadth of skills needed in today's locksmithing world. From classic cars and vintage campers to modern vehicles with smart key technology, not every locksmith in Buffalo has the experience or tools to handle such diverse tasks. That’s why referrals from fellow locksmiths mean a lot—they know I have the expertise to get the job done right, no matter the challenge.

Whether it’s a unique vehicle like a 1992 Audi Quattro, a sentimental 1976 Trillium camper trailer, or a modern 2017 VW Jetta with advanced smart key programming, having the right locksmith makes all the difference. If you have any lock and key needs, from the classic to the contemporary, Buffalock and Key is here to help.

Every job, whether big or small, old or new, reminds me why I love being a locksmith.
