Rekeying a Piece of History: Old Sargent Locks
Recently, a customer came to me after having his keys stolen—an all-too-common scenario for a locksmith. However, what made this job stand out was the age of the locks. These were old Sargent locks, the kind you don’t see every day.
Rekeying them presented a unique challenge due to their vintage design. With some help from a few online resources, I carefully figured out how to disassemble and rekey the locks. It's not every day I encounter such hardware, but I love the opportunity to work on something new and learn from it.
When faced with a lock I haven’t worked on before, I take a step back, turn off my phone, and focus entirely on the task at hand. This way, I ensure the job is done right, respecting both the craftsmanship of the old locks and the trust my customers place in me.
Job consisted of 3 doors, each with a mortise cylinder and a doorknob. Should've takena picture of the door as well but unfortuantely I'm a better locksmtih than a journalist :)
Crafting a Key for a Classic: An Early ’70s Ice Cream Truck
Continuing with the theme of vintage treasures, I recently had the chance to work on a charming old ice cream truck from the early 1970s. This vehicle, a nostalgic relic from days gone by, needed a new key to get back on the road.
Creating a key for this truck was a bit of a challenge, as the lock was a sidebar design—not the easiest to pick. After some patient work, I managed to turn the lock and read the heights of the wafers. Amazingly, I crafted a working key on the first try!
There’s something satisfying about that moment when a newly cut key turns smoothly in an old lock, breathing new life into a piece of history.
From Classic Relics to Modern Marvels: Crafting Keys for Mercedes-Benz Vehicles
And from older relics to newer ones, I recently had the opportunity to work on a few Mercedes-Benz cars that had no keys. Working on these luxury vehicles always presents a unique challenge, given their advanced security features.
Mercedes locks and ignition systems require a high level of precision and skill. Combining different techniques, I was able to program and cut new keys that worked flawlessly. There’s a certain satisfaction in knowing that the keys I create not only meet the high standards of a premium brand like Mercedes, but also provide peace of mind for the owners.
When it comes to high-end vehicles, precision and reliability are key—and I make sure to deliver on both.
